But listeners encountering them through a global platform make their decisions in seconds, using production quality as their first and fastest filter.

The knock-on effect is commercial. Brands and organisations that might sponsor or commission local podcasts are calibrating their expectations against international shows. When the average quality of the local field does not meet that benchmark, they either import content, commission internationally, or do not commission at all. The budgets that could support the ecosystem development the ecosystem needs flow elsewhere.

And the creators who might have built the knowledge base for the next generation — the editors, producers, showrunners — get frustrated and leave. Not because they lacked the skill. Because the conditions made the work unsustainable.

A media house knows how stories get made. A logistics company knows how supply chains break — and how they get fixed. None of that knowledge is reaching your audience at the depth it deserves through a press release, a LinkedIn post, or a three-minute corporate video.

A branded podcast gives that knowledge a home. It gives it a voice — often literally, through the people inside your organisation who know the work best. And it builds an archive of content that continues to find new listeners and viewers long after it was first published. A social media post has a lifespan measured in hours. The Dead Internet is hollowing out the open web. But the networks where South Africans actually talk to each other — WhatsApp groups, private Facebook communities, tight-knit Discord servers, guild communities like the South African Podcasters Guild — are precisely the spaces that the Dead Internet hasn’t reached.

This creates a strategic implication that many SA podcasters haven’t fully drawn out: community-based distribution is not just a nice supplement to algorithmic promotion — it may be the only reliable distribution channel left.

A podcast episode shared in a trusted WhatsApp group of 80 people who know and trust the person sharing it is worth more than 10,000 impressions on Instagram, half of which may be bot traffic. The recommendation arrives in a space of real human relationship. The context is trust, not algorithm.

There is also something worth noting about the connectivity cost reality in South Africa. Because internet users here bear a disproportionate cost for online activity — spending 62% of their digital budget on connectivity versus the global average of 40% — South African audiences make more deliberate choices about what they consume. When a South African listener commits to a podcast, it’s a meaningful act. That deliberateness is an asset. It means the audience who finds you is genuinely there.

Spotify’s approach layers in more signals: total follows, unique listeners, completion rates (how much of your episode people actually finish), and consistency of returning listeners. Spotify’s “Top Podcasts” ranking combines total followers with recent unique listeners, meaning a show needs to be both historically popular and currently trending. What this tells you is that Spotify rewards shows that retain listeners week after week, not just shows that spike.

One in two podcast listeners discover new shows directly inside podcast apps, and 70% of them use the search bar. Editorial features and chart positions? They account for a fraction of actual discovery. This is a significant finding that most podcasting advice ignores entirely.

And the review myth? Despite being repeated constantly in podcasting communities, there is very little evidence that five-star reviews directly boost your algorithmic ranking. Reviews matter for social proof and may influence human editorial curation — those “New and Noteworthy” placements — but the algorithm responds to behavioural signals, not star ratings. The persistence of the “beg for reviews” advice is itself a symptom of how little platform transparency exists. Creators fill the information vacuum with industry folklore, and the folklore spreads.

The platformization of podcasting has accelerated a troubling pattern: digital colonialism. This isn’t just a metaphor—it’s a structural reality that shapes what content gets seen, who gets monetized, and whose voices dominate the digital public sphere.

How Algorithmic Bias Marginalizes African Content

Recommendation algorithms on major platforms are trained primarily on Western, particularly North American, content consumption patterns. These systems “learn” what constitutes engaging content based on data sets that dramatically overrepresent certain demographics, languages, cultural references, and content styles.

The result? African podcasters face systematic algorithmic suppression, even when creating high-quality content for local audiences. A podcast discussing South African politics in local vernacular competes in algorithmic ranking systems optimized for American English content about American topics. A show exploring African economic development struggles to gain traction in systems that preferentially surface content about Western markets.

This isn’t accidental. It’s the natural outcome of systems built by and for specific markets, then deployed globally without meaningful localization. The assumption embedded in these algorithms is that “good content” looks like what performs well in Palo Alto, not what resonates in Johannesburg, Lagos, or Nairobi.

The Compounding Effect of Visibility

This is digital colonialism in practice: the extraction of value from African markets while maintaining structural barriers that prevent African creators from competing on equal terms.

Spotify’s early moves were aggressive, but they left structural openness intact. You could still start a podcast tomorrow, publish it via RSS, and reach listeners on Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Pocket Casts, or any other app that respects the standard. Spotify didn’t break the system. They just paid top creators to sit inside their garden while everyone else kept using the open gate.

YouTube pushed video, but it remained a discovery platform. A new podcaster could upload episodes, get recommended to viewers who’d never heard of them, and grow an audience organically. The algorithm was opaque and often frustrating, but it was at least possible to be discovered without spending money.

Netflix offers neither.

If your show is on Netflix, it lives behind a paywall in a closed catalogue. There is no “stumble upon this randomly” moment. There is no RSS feed that someone can add to their favourite app. There is no search result that surfaces your episode when someone Googles a question you answered in minute 34.

You are content inside Netflix’s library, alongside Stranger Things and the new true-crime documentary. You are not a publisher. You are inventory.
